The Civilized and the Untamed

I may be preaching to the choir, but balance is important in our lives. It is so important that many of us have made routines and have it scheduled into our planners. We block out time for things like exercise, meditation or some spiritually nourishing activity, and friends and family. Most of our lives are busy and we want structure to keep ourselves balanced.

This week we look at an area that we may not be taking into account. How well and how often do we express our spontaneous, uncivilized, more animal natures? We have become so civilized, that the side of ourselves that rebels at the trappings of society, such as weekly date night and group tours.

The wild side of ourselves isn’t necessarily the destructive side and can be our ally in our development if we let it. We have to let the untamed nature of ourselves express itself, and when we do, when we recognize the value and potential it offers, it won’t need to tear through barriers and wreak havoc in our lives. On the other hand, if we don’t have any structure, and live mostly on instinct and urges, then we could benefit from a little civilization as well. Balance in all things is the best, and it must be a balance that matches each individual.

There is no cookie cutter answer here. We investigate this aspect of balance this week, and we ask four questions.
1) What is the next step?
2) What is my intention?
3) What’s the joke?
4) What am I curious about?
