Trying too Hard

Before we can consider the role of willpower in an intentional life, we need to examine what we mean when we think of willpower.

Any regular activity that we maintain, whether it’s brushing our teeth at regular times, exercising, or even selecting a video to watch on YouTube is an act of will power. The choosing and acting on that choice are acts of will. In this case, willpower is certainly part of living the intentional life. Maintaining our emotional set-point as best we can, choosing to continually point ourselves in the direction of love, joy, wellbeing, and awareness, and trusting life enough to keep ourselves open to it as it unfolds for us all require strong willpower.

If we think of willpower as the struggle to get what we want or to make things happen, if we believe willpower is used to keep ourselves suffering to prove our deservedness, if we use our will to dominate situations or other people, then that kind of willpower is anathema to the intentional life.

This week we discuss how, rather that making things happen, we can find our ability to influence and inspire circumstance and manifestations, through our self understanding and understanding others. It is self awareness that will empower us.
