Analysis and Synthesis

The Lovers card in the Harris Crowley Tarot system is unique in its interpretation. For Crowley, it is a card that represents the beginnings of the alchemical process. He assigned attributes of analysis and synthesis to this card, while the culmination of the alchemical process for him was the Art card, which would be the Temperance card in other systems. The Lovers card is the first card of this week’s spread, and it gives me pause in humility because it is asking of us something that I’m not well practiced in, or perhaps better said, something that I don’t generally enjoy doing. Enjoying the process is, as we discussed last week, intrinsic to living an intentional life, and so this week’s reading is a challenge for me personally.

Why would we benefit from analysis and synthesis in living life intentionally in the first place? If we think about it, we will often have specific exemplars of the things we want to experience or the relationships we want to have as we set our intentions. These people, objects, or experiences are signs of what we want for ourselves, but those particular examples are more often than not unavailable. For example, if we see someone doing some work at a place and we think that we would want to do that too, we can hold that image of that person at work in our hearts and draw ourselves toward that work as we draw the work toward ourselves. But remember, that job is currently taken. I don’t think we want to create unemployment for that person we saw doing the work we are interested in. It might not even be the exact job or the precise workplace that is what really drew us to that example. Yet, many times we may find ourselves holding out for that job at that place, never seeing the possibilities that would more than adequately fulfill our desires.

A couple of weeks ago, we were asked to find our why. This week, we are called to do the work that will allow us to know the why.
