The Burden of Virtue

This week we seem to continue the story of burdens. Do you notice that just being in the world and doing good for those around you and for society at large seems to be more difficult these days? Does it feel like you are called on to watch out for and protect the rights and well-being of both your loved ones and people you don’t even know? Do you feel like you are surrounded by people lashing out at their follow citizens just because they are different?

If you feel any of these feelings to any extent, as I do, these are probably stressful and emotionally exhausting times for you. We are being called to be mature adults and stand upright and virtuous as a white lily. But what is virtue? We are not pointing to any uniform set of behaviors or beliefs. We are thinking of the broad spectrum virtues that are included in all religions or belief systems: working for the common good, loving unconditionally, having hope in the increase of good, being and advocating for justice, and walking the middle path of a balanced life.

This isn’t an easy task, but it’s one we are called to in this coming week to live our best intentional lives,
