Too Much of a Good ThingBy Derek John Thomas / October 24, 2024 Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? Well, it’s a commonly used idiom, so it must be true. Let’s consider one of my favorite things in the world: chocolate. I can eat and enjoy quite a lot of chocolate. However, there is a limit and I’m good at not crossing it. There was a time when I was about six years old and was unsupervised with my candy haul. I ate far too much and got severely sick. Not so much that I had to go to the hospital, but enough that I vomited and cried most of the night. That candy was not bad, but too much of it was. I’ve heard that it’s even possible to drink too much water, a necessity for life. It’s called water toxicity and, while difficult to achieve, can have very serious results including coma. Those very physical examples of too much of too much of a good thing are very understandable. What about other things like exciting experiences, wonderful expressions of love, sudden influx of wealth, etc. Is it possible to have too much of these kinds of things? The answer is probably both yes and no. What I mean is that while it is not possible to receive too much love, we may have the experience that the love we are receiving is too much. It’s overwhelming. It may feel burdensome. Why is that? I believe it is an indication that there is some strong resistance indicated here. We have put up barriers for one reason or another that are being overpowered. And the best solution for those of us who want to live intentionally, is to take a close look at those boundaries and barriers we have constructed. Not all of them are serving us as well as we think. We also want to be committed to our growth and maturity. If you want a private reading from me, go to my shop.Or you can send an email to my address: thehangedmaninthemoon@gmail.com
